Cadman's Cottage
Cadman’s Cottage was built during 1815 and 1816 and is the oldest existing dwelling in the City of Sydney. In 1827 John Cadman took up residence as superintendent of government boats – quite a promotion for a former convict transported to the colony for having stolen a horse! Cadman and his family left the Cottage in 1845 and moved to Parramatta. John Cadman held the position for nineteen years. Apart from his navigational duties he oversaw the cutting of timbers, mending of sails and boat repairs. Sydney Water Police took over the Cottage in 1846 and until 1864 used it as a Court with cells underneath. In 1972 restoration began and today the Cottage is a major historical attraction for visitors to the Rocks.
